3D On-Line Maze®

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I need a special browser to run the maze?
No. You need only to be able to load images. The 3D On-Line Maze® uses no imagemaps, Java nor Javascript so it is compatible with all browsers.

Does it cost anything to explore in the maze?
No. It's completely free.

What do I get if I complete the maze?
Upon reaching the last room of the maze you are given the option to add your name to our Explorers' Hall of Fame.

Can I bookmark the maze?
Yes. You may bookmark any of the maze's rooms facing in any direction. Click on the maze image until the frame that contains it is highlighted and direct your Web browser to make a bookmark. When you come back to the the 3D On-Line Maze® you'll begin exactly where you left off, but you will be directly "inside" the maze. If you wish to view the other options available at the Web site, click on the Return Home link that is on the bottom left of each maze page, but make a new BOOKMARK FIRST. (Only use the inside the maze Return Home link when the maze is filling your entire browser!)

When I click on the HOME link in a room things get messy?
The HOME link located on each maze page is provided as an aid to persons who have bookmarked the maze and are now running within it. That link returns them to the main 3D On-Line Maze® website so that they may access other non-maze pages such as the Explorers' Hall of Fame. If you click on it by mistake when running the maze within the main frame, merely use your browser's BACK button to restore the page.

Would this maze work in the "real world?"
Yes. The 3D On-Line Maze® is a perfectly logical representation of real rooms laid out according to the laws of physics. There are no "transporters" to move you from one point in the maze to any other point that is not adjacent to it. When you turn left or right you will view your options for proceeding in the direction 90 degrees from where you are currently headed. If you turn in a direction four times you will return to the view you began with.

Can the maze be run backwards?
Yes. Our beta-testers have run it backwards and forwards and you can too. Once you complete the 3D On-Line Maze® just bookmark the last page and then begin a new adventure as you try to find your point of origin.

How do I set up a race?
Message an on-line friend using our MazE-mail® located at the "TELL" link. Choose a time to begin and an end point within the maze (either the end of the maze, the end of a color, or a given graffiti) and be the first person to message back that you've arrived there and include the URL for the bookmark of the last page.

How large is the maze?
Currently the 3D On-Line Maze® is contained in a 17 x 18 room grid which allows for 306 separate rooms. To make the maze more difficult to map, we have "blacked out" random irregular shapes within the grid so that passageways must navigate around them.

How does this all work?
Each room in the maze consists of four Web pages. Each of those pages displays the view as seen by an individual turned toward one of four walls. That means there are over 688 separate Web pages loading within the 3D On-Line Maze® to present the views of the maze to our visitors. Each of those pages links to at least two other pages within the site (and most pages link to three) for a total of over 1,720 active hypertext links so that maze runners can fluidly navigate the maze! With 28 lines of code per page that's over 19,264 lines of hand-written HTML working flawlessly to keep your maze running fun!

How was this put together?
Our coders and graphic artists created the 3D On-Line Maze® entirely on Macintosh® computers. To guarantee the smallest file sizes possible (less than 1K!), no HTML scripting programs were used to generate the code for the rooms. All of the text was written in Apple's SimpleText® text-editor and loaded directly onto a Unix server connected with fiber optics to two major Internet backbones. That's why the 3D On-Line Maze® can be navigated quickly by persons with slow modem connections.

What's next?
One word: Stairs. The Maze-masters at WebHarmony LLC are currently building the dungeon below the present maze and the attic above. Look for stairways, trap doors, elevators and more to appear in future versions of the On-Line Maze.
